The site for the new restaurant for the Nationale Archives is tucked between the traditional houses of the parisian suburbs and the monolithique building of the archives. The site is a unique natural environment, a wild garden of trees, vines, flowers and grasses. The garden is both the frontier and the connection between the archives and it’s surroundings.

We feel that this presence of nature has the capacity to cushion the transition between the scale of the archives and the the patchwork of the residential urban tissue. As such we cannot imagine the National Archives without it’s garden.

Delordinaire has chosen to blur the limits between the restaurant and nature, amplifying the proximity between clients and nature. The experience of this building will be synonymous with that of the garden.

We imagined raising almost half of the garden to a height of three metres. The space underneath is filled with various functions such as the kitchen, the dining room, offices, etc. All of these spaces face the greenery along the border of the site. At the south end of the building, a glazed roof provides natural light, a view of the treetops and, when it rains, water streaming down the glass surface.
